Kent Salomonssons tidigare forskning har varit fokuserad på mikromekanisk modellering av strukturlim som används i fordonsindustrin.

Centralt i forskningen är utveckling av numeriska modeller för att förklara och analysera fysikaliska fenomen på mikroskala för att sedan använda detta som grund för att skapa numeriska modeller på strukturskala där krav ställs på snabba tillförlitliga beräkningar.

Främst forskar Kent Salomonsson på sprickpropagering och värmeledning i olika gjutjärnslegeringar, men på senare tid har utvecklingen av de mikromekaniska numeriska modellerna visat sig vara användbara även för biomekanisk analys av trycksår i mänsklig vävnad.
