CCD international seminar: Disability - a category for historical learning and thinking?

Prof. Sebastian Barsch, a History Education professor at the University of Cologne in Germany, will address the challenge of promoting historical thinking beyond conventional master narratives in the wake of global inequalities and increasingly global crises. It is increasingly important to critically question majority views and to make the diversity that actually exists in society fruitful for historical learning. Using disability history as an example, history teaching is faced with the challenge of arguing with categories of social order in order to question the validity of these social orders. In other words, a history lesson that deals with the exclusion and integration of individual groups engages in othering even as it seeks to overcome it. The talk will explore these tensions and also consider the extent to which disability can be the subject of historical learning, and the extent to which the presence of disabled students has an impact on the design of history teaching.

Zoom: https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/67843537479

Välkomna på Tina Yngvessons halvtidsseminarium i pedagogik!

Titel:
Parent engagement in the Swedish preschool - an interview study from the parent perspective

Sammanfattning:
The focus of the research is to produce knowledge about the relationship between the non-private preschool- and home in Sweden, and to explore how these relationships are articulated in the curriculum for preschool and subsequently implemented, interpreted, transformed, and executed in the context of early childhood education in Sweden. The study will do this through interviews from a parent perspective, and central in this study is the parent’s view on partnerships and participation. In parallel with the concept of participation, this research study also departs in the understanding that the engagement between relevant social agents that are necessary to maintain the democratic right of the child. This conception of children’s right to be heard- and to be informed, states that it is the duty of the parents and community to provide appropriate direction and guidance to the developing child, with the aim of evolving his or her capacities. From this we may learn two things: 1) Parents need to be involved, somehow, and act in a way that give them authority as parents and 2) the state is deciding over parenthood leaving the state as the main parent or caretaker, since parents cannot decide over the state. Overall, the research advocate that parents have the competence to participate in the pedagogical activities of their children’s lives provided they are given forum to do so. Through the concepts of the importance of parents in children’s early childhood education, the study aims to illuminate opportunities and challenges of engagement in early childhood education practices and policies.

Zoom: https://hb-se.zoom.us/j/6084810360

Dr Vejune Zemaityte is a Senior Research Fellow in Film Data Analytics at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School (BFM), Tallinn University, Estonia. She researches film production, theatrical film distribution, film festival circuit, public service television, and historical newsreels.

Participation in international film festivals is crucial for films, particularly for independent productions in smaller markets, as they facilitate critical recognition, audience engagement, and distribution opportunities. Our research utilizes the Cinando database, managed by Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes, to conduct data-driven analyses of the festival circuit, modeling festivals as a global network and examining the diversity and public value of festival programming. This investigation helps understand why certain films succeed internationally and includes a discussion on the challenges and insights gained from working with "found" data not originally intended for research purposes. This talk will discuss some of the quantitative approaches we applied to the film festival database, highlighting not only our results but also the process of working with so-called “found” data created for reasons other than research.

Find out more via the Data Methods Initiative website
