BIM supported evidence based product development process of lit environments.
The purpose of this project is to develop a product development process, with a focus on the lit environments, where Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Evidence-Based Design (EBD) are used to design buildings that deliver higher values for users, purchasers, and managers.

This project contains a literature study, with the purpose of developing a framework and two case studies, to validate the framework. The process of Evidence-based design (EBD) and the application of lighting simulation tools in the EBD process will be investigated to improve the assessment of the effects of light on occupant’s perception. The first case study is concerning visual comfort analysis in an existing office using developed framework integrated by simulation and Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE).
A more advanced case study will be designed based on the developed framework and simulation. A standard room in PTS (Program for Technical Standard) and several instances of the standard room in real hospital environment will be chosen for simulation. The lighting quality of these rooms will be evaluated by a variety of performance metrics.
A POE will be conducted in collaboration with the LP-Project (“Ljusmiljöns påverkan på patienter, närstående och personal inom psykiatri, rehabilitering och intensivvård”) that will meet academic standard (the highest level of evidence).
The results from the case studies will be used for 1) creating assessment criteria for lighting quality (need-metrics matrix), 2) developing a standard format to clarify the evidence (for lighting analysis), 3) proposing a method for developing a database for EBD using the results of simulations and associating them to POE in Building information modelling (BIM). The results are intended to be published as three academic papers.
