The purpose of this course is to enhance participants’ awareness and comprehension of how private and family-owned companies can advance their sustainability and owners can embrace responsible practices. The course develops the competencies and skills of private owners, family business members, decision makers, and more in general business leaders on sustainability and responsible ownership. Moreover, the course stimulates dialogue and reflection about the opportunities for the regeneration of enterprises to stimulate the renewal of strategy and operations.


The course on Sustainability and Responsible Ownership of the Family Enterprise is based on more than 20 years of research and practical experience from family enterprises developed by the Centre for Family Entrepreneurship and Ownership (CeFEO) at Jönköping International Business School. Thanks to a large network of international collaborators and partners, CeFEO offers a unique regional, national, and international perspective in discussing sustainability and responsible ownership.


What does online distance learning involve?

Through the learning platform you’ll get access to recorded lectures, case studies and other study material. Communication takes place largely through discussion forums and e-meetings. This flexible form means that within each course section you can, to a large extent, choose the time and place for your studies, while regular deadlines distribute the studies evenly over the course.


What's the target group?

The course is tailor-made for business owners, professionals and practitioners, working in or with private businesses and family companies, as well as for next-generation business leaders and successors.

This course builds on the research excellence and practical relevance of the Centre for Family Entrepreneurship and Ownership, bridging the core competences of JIBS faculty on sustainability and ownership. The participants will have a unique opportunity for applying the most relevant theoretical concepts to examples, cases and experiences from private businesses engaged in sustainable practices.

  • The applicant has a Bachelor ́s degree and has an extensive leadership experience in a family business.
  • Other applicant with a Bachelor ́s degree or an extensive business experience might be accepted to the course based on clear motivations for participating to a Sustainability and Responsible Ownership course.
  • English proficiency is required (level 6/B or equivalent).


We request all candidates to provide us with an application letter (min 300, max 500 words) written in English. This letter clearly describes the motivations for taking a family business course. In particular, the application letter contains:

  • your personal and professional reasons for taking the Sustainability and Responsible Ownership course.
  • description of your leadership experience in a private business (e.g. as owner, member of the board, manager, or member of a family business).

The application letter should be submitted as a PDF.

In order to apply, you need to upload the following documents:

  • Education certificate: Bachelor's or Master's diploma and transcript
  • Work experience certificate: provided by the employer stating the title, role, employment start and end dates, details about years of leadership experience.

In addition to the registration of 15 ECTS credits at master’s level, you will receive a certificate in "Sustainability and Responsible Ownership", issued by Jönköping International Business School, after completion of the course.

This 15 credits master course is based on 5 module web-based at a quarter speed rate, gives you the opportunity to combine work and studies at university level. In this course, you will meet world-leading researchers, exchange experiences with other professionals and will get the opportunity to apply your new knowledge to your own professional life.

The course is offered at an advanced level and is given in English. Each of the 5 modules of 3 credits consists in 3 online lectures (pre-recorded) and 3 online meetings (in real time) for a duration of 6 weeks per module. The estimated effort for taking this course is about 10 hours of study per week.
