The Thursday public lectures will be given by those professors who will be inaugurated at the Academic Ceremony as well as the winner of the Pedagogical Prize.

The inauguration of full professors and conferment of PhDs takes place every 18 months at Jönköping University. The celebration is an impressive occasion with many guests, beautiful, festive clothes, speeches and live music.

This year, the presidential installation, inauguration and conferment ceremony is taking place on 4 May.

Staff and students who want to attend the ceremony may pick up maximum two free tickets in the Service Center, until 3 May. Bring your JU card for identification!

STINT’s programme Teaching Sabbatical aims to develop both individuals and institutions. By giving Swedish researchers and university lecturers, who are passionate about education, international experiences relevant to their teaching role rather than their research one, STINT wants to contribute to educational renewal and the creation of new networks. Great emphasis is put on the added value of the stay abroad, which is why STINT encourages candidates to search for new international experiences.

The current call is for Teaching Sabbatical that can take place in the Autumn 2025 at one of STINT’s partners in Botswana, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and the USA. The application opens in June 2024 with a deadline in August 2024.

On 14-15 May, the 18th Society and Materials (SAM) International Conference will be organized at Jönköping University (JU).

The conference is a meeting place for international academia and industry to discuss the challenges that material manufacturing and materials use have in building a sustainable society.

The conference is held at the School of Education and Communication at JU.

Professor Kristina Säfsten at the School of Engineering (JTH) at Jönköping University (JU) is the moderator for ’JTH Talks’ on May 14, focusing on the learnings and results from JTH's collaboration with Träcentrum in Nässjö. During the seminar, Associate Professor Jenny Bäckstrand and Assistant Professor Malin Löfving from JTH will talk about their experiences from acting as boundary spanners between academia and industry. They will also give examples of projects that have been (and are) conducted jointly between JTH and Träcentrum.

Tim, Madeleine, and Matthias are presenting their research titled as “Digital sherlocks vs. fake news: how online communities collectively identify deceptive narratives”.

“It’s the frailty of genius. It needs an audience” (Sherlock Holmes)

Deceptive narratives, such as fake news, spread quickly on digital platforms and pose significant challenges to society by distorting public discourse and influencing political and social outcomes based on misinformation. However, although mostly portrayed as passive consumers of narratives, digital audiences are not powerless in the face of deceptive narratives – they possess collective knowledge, can use critical thinking and community-driven efforts to discern and counteract false information. In two studies, we examine, based on Truth Default Theory (TDT), how audiences actively engage in deception detection. In Study 1, we analyze 1’941 conversations on Reddit where ‘fake news’ had been detected, using LDA topic modeling and selective qualitative insights. This allows us to identify recurring conversation patterns related to audiences’ active role in detecting deceptive narratives. Connecting these insights and TDT, we create propositions on the ‘sherlocking’ of audiences that allows for deception detection.  In study 2, we test these propositions based on a quantitative analysis of around 163 million Reddit posts. Together, these studies provide insights into how audiences engage with and scrutinize narratives. Furthermore, we extend TDT, which traditionally focuses on individual deception detection in face-to-face interactions, by considering the collectivism of audiences.

“How to make use of evidence-based management in entrepreneurship: The example of Personal Initiative Training.” Prof. Frese is one of the two recipients of this year’s Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, and he will tour across universities in Sweden after the award ceremony in Stockholm.

The topic is relevant to both faculty and students.

At the School of Health and Welfare we have several projects related to the phenomonen work and working life. The projects range widely from e.g., ergonomics for first responders, to work after retirement and the lack or inaccessibility to work, precaious work with a range of target groups and research methods.

We know that we are not alone in this interest in work as a topic, and there may be many at JU who are interested, even those who are not engaged in an on-going project.

We want to gather collegees at JU with an interest in the topic of work and thus be able to get a range of perspectives and the possibility to discuss and enrich the research about work at JU.

We have planned a start-up meeting May 29th, 13.00 to 15.00 at Gd305 (entrance floor, left turn) at the School of Health and Welfare, to discuss and eventually start planning how to proceed.

At the meeting we will have four presentations from researchers at JU, to show some of the present studies. Furthermore, we will share our ideas and perspectives on the phenonomen work.
