Abstract: We investigate the causal link between retirement and various cognitive performance metrics, such as mathematical ability, episodic memory, and verbal fluency. Utilizing a fuzzy Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) and data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we analyze shifts in retirement probabilities at both early and statutory retirement ages. The results reveal a short-term positive influence of retirement on cognitive performance, which transitions to a negative impact over the long term. The effects of retirement on cognitive ability are more pronounced for individuals who faced high work constraints, limited freedom, and high job complexity during their working years.

Van Trong Nguyen is a 2nd year student at our Master program, Applied Economics and Data Analysis. This paper is a revised version of Van Trong’s written assignment for the Public Economics module in the course Applied Economics for Decision-Making.
