Ordinary People, Meaningful Pasts: Negotiating Family History Research Narratives of Identity, the Past and Learning

Family history research is a prevalent example of the use of the past for present and future purposes. Identity and where and whom a person comes from are explicitly intertwined. In an increasingly accessible globalised and digitalised context, destabilisation and attempts to strengthen imagined community boundaries are perceived through the rise of populist and nationalist politics and increased awareness of mental health crisis linked to existential questions, xenophobia, and questions of authenticity. It is, therefore, essential to examine how the fast-growing popular “hobby” of family history research influences and contributes to today's social climate.

This thesis attempts to relay the scope of experience through the exploration and comparison of three distinct family history research experiences 1) semi-structured interviews with 16 previous contestants from Allt för Sverige, a Swedish reality, family history television programme, 2) Thematic analysis of the result documentation received from four genetic ancestry companies: AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, and 23andMe, and 3) Semi-structured interviews with seven participants from two Swedish non-formal family history research courses.
