What does microstructure evolution actually look like? How do the phases evolve in the melt with time? How does segregation change the distribution of chemical elements?

Phase-field simulation is a powerful tool to understand and predict solidification of casting alloys. Together with thermodynamic calculations it enables calculations of the amount and morphology of phases in 2D and 3D as well as distribution maps of the solute elements. The simulations can be applied to generate Representative Volume Elements (RVE) and enable Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) as a way of exploring and generating new alloys and materials and predict mechanical properties.

This webinar continues the module “Simulation Technology in Metal Casting” of WebLearn. This time, we will meet Dr. Janin Eiken and associate professor Jakob Olofsson in a webinar about phase-field simulations. Janin has more than 25 years' experience of working at Access e.V. in Aachen, that develops the phase-field simulation software MICRESS. In this webinar, we will get an introduction and overview of the topic, and see some applications to different materials such as cast iron, aluminium alloys etc.
