Communicating Health for Equity in a Diverse Society: Exploring Experiences, Trust and Accessibility in Communication Practices in Breast Cancer Screening

Sammanfattning:
The project is situated within the field of health communication and will examine how health-related communication is shaped, mediated, and interpreted within the healthcare system and in our contemporary, diverse society. Grounded in perspectives on equitable and person-centred care, the project will look into how communication practices address the conditions of migrants originating from countries outside Europe.

A potential empirical case will concern communication about breast cancer screening and mammography in Swedish health care. Using this context, the project will investigate how foreign-born women from countries outside of Europe, living in Sweden, experience current communicative initiatives, meaning how cultural, social, and structural conditions shape their interpretation of and access to the information; as well as how communicative processes relate to broader perspectives such as cultural norms, sense of coherence, trust, and opportunities for participation.

By examining health-related communication in a multicultural healthcare society and analysing how communication is produced, conveyed, and experienced, based on the perspectives outlined above, the project seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of how communication operates as a social and institutional practice within complex, diverse settings.
