Titel:
Highly educated migrants' learning in the encounter with educational professionals within Swedish municipal adult education
Sammanfattning:
Migration involves complex transitions that reshape individuals’ personal and professional lives. This study examines learning of highly educated migrants as they navigate life and career transitions in a new environment. This is a learning process that usually takes place in the encounter between migrants, as adult learners, and the educational system of a new country. In Sweden, municipal adult education (MAE), as part of the formal education system, is often the first context migrants meet while navigating their transitions. This project focuses on how learning is understood, shaped and experienced in this context, where three parties involved meet and interact: highly educated migrants, teachers, and career guidance counsellors. To better understand highly educated migrants’ learning in the encounter with educational professionals in MAE is crucial to enable meaningful learning and support in transitions for this target group.
The aim of the project is to generate new knowledge and increased understanding about the learning of highly educated migrants in the encounter with educational professionals within MAE by identifying conceptualisations about learning, how these are expressed and how these shape educational practice from the perspectives of the three groups that are involved in the learning process (highly educated migrants, teachers and study and career guidance). In addition, the project intends to map dominant themes in research on municipal adult education and how migrants and career guidance are addressed. The thesis consists of four articles, which together aim to answer the overall purpose. The project applies a qualitative design, and data is collected through focus group discussions with the three separate target groups.
The first study is a scoping review of recent research on MAE, mapping dominant themes and examining how migrants and career guidance are addressed.
The second study focused on how highly educated migrants experience their life and career transitions related to their learning within the municipal adult education context. The study is based on empirical data from three focus group discussions with migrants attending MAE.
The third study is planned to focus on how highly educated migrants conceptualise learning in encounters with teachers and counsellors.
The fourth study is planned to examine how these professionals (teachers and counsellors) conceptualise learning and describe their educational practices in relation to highly educated migrants within MAE.
