In this podcast series, you will hear what practitioners from sustainability-oriented companies and academics from different fields focusing on social innovation and sustainability research think about the major challenges and future opportunities in the transition to the circular economy.

Adjunct Prof. Maarit Salolainen is an experienced international textile design professional with a passion for bringing textile knowledge to multidisciplinary platforms. Salolainen is the Head of the Master’s Programme of Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. As Adjunct Professor for Textile Design at Aalto University, she has been developing higher education studies in the field of textile, material and surface design, focusing on renewing studio pedagogy and linking textile studies to fashion education as well as other design disciplines. She has also developed experimental pedagogy in multidisciplinary courses exposing engineering students to design processes. In addition to her academic work, Salolainen works internationally as a creative director consulting textile manufacturers and interior textile editors. Her specialisation is in fibres, yarns, fabrics and finishes - in the creative and technical knowledge of woven fabrics, jacquards, embroideries and prints and finishes ranging from velvets and heavy upholstery to sheers. Salolainen manages seasonal interior textile collections for the residential as well as for the contract market from research and initial concept through technical and creative development to final quality decisions and colour coordination. Currently she works as a creative director for the Turkish textile mill Vanelli, leading the team of 20 designers in developing new concepts, products and collections for international interior textile editors and brands as well as the in-house brand.

MSc Jaana Hjelt, Co-owner and Marketing Manager at Lapuan Kankurit, was born in Lapua, Southern Ostrobothnia, Finland, where the company’s weaving mill is located. She graduated as Master of Science, with a major in Industrial Management & Engineering and International Marketing, from Tampere University of Technology. She has worked in the UK and Germany, before returning back to Southern Ostrobothnia and starting a career as an Export Area Manager at ABB. In 2000, she then started as an entrepreneur at Lapuan Kankurit Oy, with her husband Esko Hjelt. Esko’s father and mother founded Lapuan Kankurit at 1973. The very first weaving mill in the family was founded already 1917 by Esko’s greatgrandfather.

Lapuan Kankurit is a jacquard weaving mill, where weaving skills and material knowhow have been refined into excellence for decades. Behind the successful products are top designers, craftsmanship, the latest weaving techniques and a responsible attitude towards the environment and people. Lapuan Kankurit weaves linen and wool interior textiles. The turnover of the weaving mill is 5,5 M€, from which around 50% is from export. Lapuan Kankurit retailers can be found from 30 countries, but the main markets are in Finland, Japan, Germany and USA. Lapuan Kankurit has its own online store and own shops are located in Lapua, Helsinki and Tokyo. Lapuan Kankurit has just started a new two-million-euro investment to the weaving and finishing production in Lapua. Main focus in this investment is to be able to start using local Finnsheep wool in their production.

Her business experience covers LEGO and Flying Tiger Copenhagen where she headed the CSR work for a number of years. She has deep knowledge on international standards on sustainability and responsible business conduct as well as extensive experience from applying in practice across different sectors, including textile and fashion. Michael Braungart is professor at the Leuphana University Lüneburg and founder of EPEA, Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency in Hamburg (Germany), ‘The cradle of Cradle to Cradle’. He is also co-founder of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) in Charlottesville, Virginia and founder of the Hamburger Environmental Institute (HUI). For decades, Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart has pioneered the Cradle to Cradle design concept. He has worked with a number of organizations and companies across a range of industries, and has developed tools for designing eco-effective products, business systems and intelligent materials pooling. In 2019 Michael Braungart was awarded the Goldene Blume von Rheydt (Golden Flower of Rheydt), the oldest environmental protection award in Germany, for his work.

Cornelius Herstatt

Prof. Cornelius Herstatt is a leading German researcher and university professor for innovation management. He holds a chair at the Technical University of Hamburg, is the Managing Director of the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management at the Technical University Hamburg and heads the Center for Frugal Innovation (CFI). After a commercial apprenticeship, he studied business administration and economics at the universities of Cologne, Zurich and Oxford. He received his doctorate from the Institute for Business Research at the University of Zurich and worked for five years as a scientific assistant at the Institute of Business Administration at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. In 1990 he became a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-Boston). Before being appointed professor in 1998, Prof. Herstatt held various management positions at an international management consultancy and a Swiss industrial group.

In his research, Herstatt has been researching the phenomenon of “user innovation” since the early 1980s. With the advent of the Internet, his research increasingly focused on “open source innovation” in (Internet-) communities. In recent times, he has been particularly interested in so-called “frugal innovations”, which often emerge in the context of developing countries and are often a driving force inclusive innovation. Another focus is his research on social innovations in developing countries, supporting social cohesion among others.

Prof. Herstatt’s research is internationally oriented and focuses on Asia and Europe. He researches and publishes together with international colleagues and institutions. Herstatt is author and editor of 25 books on innovation research and several hundred publications in German, English and Japanese. Herstatt has held visiting professorships at Australian, Japanese and American universities and is an alumnus of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the German Institute for Japanese Studies, the East-West Center (Hawaii) and Templeton College (Oxford). He is an advisor to small and large companies, policymakers and NGOs around the world.

MBA Thomas Beck is a Senior Project Manager at Phoenix Contact Electronics GmbH, Germany, in the area of Portfolio Management. He has 10 years’ working experience at Phoenix Contact, and 25 years’ experience in the area of electric automation.

He has an MBA degree in Business Administration. His expertise lies in business development, with a focus on product management and strategic marketing projects.

Rupert Baumgartner

Rupert J. Baumgartner is professor of sustainability management at the Institute of Systems Sciences, Innovation and Sustainability Research, University of Graz, Austria. Since 2011 he is director of this Institute and he acted from 2012 to 2019 as Vice-Dean for research of the Faculty for Regional-, Environmental- and Educational Sciences/University of Graz. He is board member of the International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS).

Before joining the University of Graz, he was senior researcher in the field of strategic management and industrial ecology at the Åbo Akademi University in Finland and at the University of Leoben, Austria. He published more than 50 journal papers in leading academic journals, 3 books and more than 20 book sections. His main research interests are corporate sustainability management, sustainability assessment, LCA, industrial ecology/circular economy, and sustainability-oriented innovation.

He was named as DuPont Young Professor 2016 and he was awarded with the Seraphine-Puchleitner-Price 2017 by the University of Graz as the best PhD-supervisor. Since November 2018 he is the director of the Christian-Doppler-Research Laboratory for Sustainable Product Management enabling a Circular Economy.

Johan Bachler
