The AI assistent CoPilot is Microsofts version of ChatGPT. As student or staff at JU you have access to an Enterprise version of CoPilot which have better information security than the consumer version.

NOTE! CoPilot is the name on several of Microsofts AI services, this web based AI assistent should not be mistaken for CoPilot which is built into Windows 11 and the Office programs – these require a separately purchased license.

If you need help to get started with CoPilot, please contact IT Helpdesk.

Contact the University Library if you're interested in integrating AI and information search into your course or in your role as a researcher: biblioteket@ju.se.

CoPilot basically uses the same generative language model as ChatGPT 4 and has corresponding functions:

  • CoPilot is connected to the internet and can give referenses to web pages and perform tasks based on the content on web pages, etc. Thus the limitations to old training data, like in the free version of ChatGPT, do not exist here.
  • It is possible to generate images, using OpenAI's generative image service Dall-E in the background.
  • It is possible to upload images and let the service describe, answer questions or perform tasks based on the content of the image.

Here are some examples of how the service can be used:

  • to access and search for information about or in articles and resources, eg. to find relevant search terms within a topic.
  • to summarize, analyze and provide insights into research reports and articles. It can help you as a user to identify key concepts, trends and gaps in existing texts.
  • to brainstorm ideas for projects, proposals and experiments.
  • to assist in the production of texts, including drafts of articles, reports, application documents and lecture notes. It can provide grammar suggestions and translate into many different languages.
  • to create personalized texts and quizzes for students. It can generate practice questions, explanations and educational content tailored to individual needs.
  • to explain or summarize a text in other words.

A big and important difference to ChatGPT and other language models is that CoPilot is adapted for companies and universities. When we log in with our JU accounts, we get a green shield and the text "Your personal and company data are protected in this chat" above the text box. Which in practice means the following:

  • The chat history will not be saved, it will be deleted after a session ends or expires.
  • The data is sent encrypted to Microsoft's servers.
  • Input data is deleted after it has been cached during the chat session.
  • Input data is not used to train the language model.
  • Plugins cannot be used, to to avoid data leaking to third parties.
  • The mobil app will not work, but he service can be used in the web browser of the mobile phone as well.
  • The service cannot be connected to an API.

Important things to consider

We already know that there can be a bias that can be really unfortunate, as the answers are based on training data that reflects the content of the web and our society with all that that entails. We also know that the language models can "hallucinate" or "lie", two words that actually describe human phenomena and perhaps should not really be mixed up in an AI context where a language model tries to put together a sequence of words that seems reasonable in a certain context. But it can get crazy under certain circumstances and it is therefore important to be aware of this and to always check the material that has been generated.
