When your current study permit expires, you need to apply for an extension of the study permit to continue studying.

You should apply for an extension of your study permit if you are not planning on leaving Sweden while waiting for the decision.

For an extension application, it could take up to 7-8 months for a decision to arrive (depending on when you submit it).

If you are planning on leaving Sweden for the summer or for an exchange semester and your Swedish residence permit will expire, you should apply for a NEW study permit and not an extension because of the long processing time (especially during the summer months).
